From west of ballpark

  1. East on I-20 to Hearn Ave. / US 171 Exit 16A
  2. Turn Left (North) at light, pass under freeway.
  3. Take an immediate wide left at next light (on what is also access to the on-ramp to I-20).
  4. Keep to the right side of road to get on Corol St. and avoid returning to freeway.
  5. Continue one block west on Corol. The ballpark will be directly in front of you
  6. At the Stop Sign, turn left onto McGowan Dr. (right turn is Velva Ave.)
  7. Follow McGowan Dr. around south side of ballpark and take first right into parking lot.

Alternate: if you turn (accidentally) right onto Velva Ave...

  1. After going one block north, take a left on Kings Highway
  2. At McGowan, turn right and follow McGowan Dr.
  3. In less than a block take left into parking lot on northwest side of ballpark.

From east (Downtown Shreveport)

  1. West on I-20 to Hearn Ave. US 171 Exit 16A
  2. At stop light go straight across Hearn Ave.
  3. Keep to the right side of road to get on Corol St. and avoid returning to freeway.
  4. Continue one block west on Corol. The ballpark will be directly in front of you
  5. Turn left onto McGowan Dr. (right turn is Velva Ave.)
  6. Follow McGowan Dr. around south side of ballpark and take first right into parking lot.

From east, if you miss Hearn Ave. Exit

  1. Take next exit Jewella Ave. US 171 Exit 14
  2. At stop light, turn right (north) onto Jewella Ave.
  3. Go north one block and turn right (east) onto Fair St.
  4. Follow Fair St. east as it turns in McGowan Dr. (Fair St. becomes a left turn to Independence Stadium)
  5. Follow McGowan Dr. around south side of Indendence Stadium
  6. Continue on McGowan Dr. past Bolinger Dr.
  7. Keep an eye out for an entrance to the parking lot
  8. Take a left to enter parking lot and park by ballpark; you may see a sign for the "Blue Lot" which is on the ballpark end

Where is it on the map?

This sign on the ballpark is really easy to see from the freeway.
Unfortunately it's often when you've already passed the exit

Fair Grounds Field is probably not on your map but you probably will probably see something marking the Lousiana State Fair Grounds southwest of downtown Shrevport. On my 2007 atlas this was a large green area right along I-20. As the ballpark's name suggests it's "on the fair grounds" along with the Hirsch Memorial Coliseum and the Lousiana State Exhibition Museum which are part of the State Fair of Lousiana.

If the map has a little more detail you may find Independence Stadium, formerly State Fair Stadium, and home of the NCAA football Independence Bowl. It too is on the fair grounds. Fair Grounds Field and Independence Stadium are on the east and west ends of a huge parkling lot that serves all events on the fair grounds area.

One thing to keep in mind is that if you're on Greenwood Road, which runs along the north side of the state fair grounds, you won't be able to get to the parking lot. The entrances on that side of the area are closed. You'll have to go to either the east (near Hearn Ave.) or west (Jewella Ave.) ends to get to McGowan Rd. (which is essentially an access road just north of the freeway).

What landmarks should I look for?

From the freeway the ballpark itself is very easy to see since it's only a few hundred feet away with a large sign for the Sports. Of course it's also quite close to the Hearn Ave. exit and a bend in the road. As a result, when headed east, you have to be on the far side of the freeway to take the exit. If headed west (from downtown) you may not see it until after you pass the exit (and have to take the Jewella Ave. route).

If headed east (from the Texas border) the cue to get ready to take the exit is Independence Stadium which is hard to miss given its size. It too is only a few hundred feet north of the freeway. Since Hearn Ave. is the first exit east of the (football) stadium, use it to prepare to exit.

What you should bring with you?

Shreveport is often quite warm and humid. With most games during the evenings there's little need for heavy jackets or coats. Rain is something you might want to carry along if there's a threat of showers with a big umbrella, rain poncho or jacket. Fair Grounds Field has some large roofs over most of the grandstand but they really do not give much shelter from the rains.

Taking the Hearn Ave. exit (16A, westbound) when coming from downtown can make finding the ballpark trivial
